Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was charged by the Football Association for allegedly using abusive language toward Manchester United’s Patrice Evra during a Premier League match between the clubs on Oct. 15.
“It is further alleged that this included a reference to the ethnic origin and/or color and/or race of Patrice Evra,” English soccer’s governing body said in a statement on its website. The F.A. said it would issue no further comment.
Liverpool said today that Suarez, a 24-year-old Uruguay international, “remains determined to clear his name of the allegation made against him.”
“We will discuss the matter fully with him when he returns from international duty, but he will plead not guilty to the charge and we expect him to request a personal hearing,” the club said in a statement.
